Chester Le Street Florist - Cestria Florists - Durham County

Chester Le Street is nested on the River Wear about half way between Durham City and Newcastle Upon Tyne. In the County of Durham in the Land of the Prince Bishops. Home of Durham County Cricket Club.

First Bible translated into English at Chester Le Street

Chester Le Street betrays its Roman and Norman origins. In fact Cestria Florists is located on Church Chare, just a stones throw away from The Parish Church of St Mary and St Cuthbert where the bible was first translated into English.

Roman Fort Concangis at Chester Le Street

This was also the sight of a Roman Fort on the main Newcastle - York Road. The Roman name for the Chester Le Street Fort was CONCANGIS and it covered just over 6 Acres.

Rumour has it (and the origins start here) that there has been a flower shop on this sight since the arrival of Emperor Hadrian in 122. He visited the region to curb a major rebellion, noticed the Lambtons had built a Folly on Penshaw Hill that looked a little 'Greek' and fancied doing something 'a bit more Roman' .

A stone from the original fort was used as part of the foundation to the nearby church. It had a romano-pictish inscription only recently translated and reads 'that Spanish-Italian lad still cannitdu cornas' .
A local archeologist pointed out the remarkable significance of this inscription:- it seems Hadrian never finished his City and Guilds Certificate in Stone Masonry and could only build straight walls and roads.

Roman Florist - Chester Le Street

Hadrian visited Cestria Florists to order a vast quantity of hanging baskets saying 'they'll help brighten up the place and improve the fettle of the locals'. He also purchased a bunch of flowers for his wife Plotina as an apology for putting in so much overtime at the building site on Valentines Day!
